Discovery Time Reflection

Discovery Time Reflection

Today at Discovery Time I taught unicycling to Lucy.H, Grace, and Brooke. We were outside on the court until it started to spit then we went in the sheltered area by the class room.

A struggle for me was teaching other people how to unicycle. I have never taught unicycling before because when I learnt,  my mom taught me and my mom also taught my sister so I never actually taught anyone.

Someone I noticed was Grace because when she messed up she got back on the unicycle like it never happened and she did really well after she fell off.

I showed a growth mindset when I kept teaching them how to unicycle even though it was boring because I didn't get to ride the unicycle myself.

I felt good because the people I taught did really well and I think I also did well on teaching them how to unicycle.

I achieved teaching 3 people how to unicycle and it was an achievement because it was only my second time teaching other people to unicycle.

I learned that I could teach 3 people how to unicycle which is awesome because it was new for me.

Overall I would love to do it again, everyone did well, and  it was so much fun even though I was bored.

Unicycling

Unicycling

It was a few years ago on a warm sunny morning I learned to unicycle. We were at a big tennis court near my home in America. My mom was there cheering me on, my sister was there telling me to mess up because she wanted to use my unicycle. I felt as happy as a bunny who got a golden carrot the size of a whale. I felt that way because I learned how to ride a unicycle and most people don't know how to ride a unicycle or don't have one. When I learned how to ride the unicycle I had a big smile on my face and I fell off because my legs were tired, and it was hard.

Tree climbing

                                  Tree climbing

Have you ever climbed a tree befor? Well I have and it was for tree climbing at camp.

The whistle blew and we lined up. The activity hamner leader Jess called on group one. She said that we were doing tree climbing. I was in group one with my friend Brooke and I was so excited.

We all stood up and walked over to the trees that we were going to climb, they had a massive trunk and a really big wooden ladder that led to small blocks of wood nailed into the tree.

Jess told us to get a helmet. It took me a while to find a helmet my size. Then we lined up on the outline of the tree that we were going to climb first. The leader Jess told us that we could not go into the sand box area without a helmet on. Jess told us what we could and couldn't do and as always it felt like it took forever.

Jess asked for someone to volunteer and a few people put there hand up. The person she chose had to put the harness on then showed how to climb up and down the big fat tree. Afterwards we split up into two groups and both groups climbed the same tree but on different sides. We decided who was going first and who was last.

Finally it was my turn to climb the tree and Brooke  was the belayer. ( The belayer is someone who helps the climber get up and down). I put the harness on and started to climb up the ladder. I looked at the blocks that would help me get up. I started to climb up the big fat tree.

It was very easy at the beginning then it got harder but I managed to get to the top. When I looked down, I thought I would be afraid because I was high but I didn't have a butterfly in my stomach.

When I had to come down I didn't want to because I thought I was going to hit the branch behind me. It took me like 1 minute but when I did start to go down I didn't hit the branch behind me and Brooke brought me down with the belayer.

Finally it was Brooke's turn to climb up the tree and my turn to be belayer. She went up the ladder and started to climb. When she was climbing up Jess told me to let go so I did and Brooke didn't fall.

When everyone finished climbing the tree we went to the next tree. The 2nd tree that we were going to climb was a tall pine tree that when I looked at it and it looked 4 times the size the other tree.

Brooke got to decided who would go 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th and so on because she won the rock paper scissors thing. I was 2nd at climbing it and Brooke was the belayer. Then after my turn I would be my turn to be belayer.

When I started to climb I thought it would be harder than the other tree but it turned out that it was easier even though the half way through the wood blocks that I grab onto went away so that I had to use the branches. I thought it would be harder When I looked at it but when I climbed it it was so much easier because the branches and I felt more confident after I let go of Brooke when I was the belayer.Coming down was harder than going up but I felt better than I did climbing down the first tree.

Once everyone climbed it we came back together in one group and took the helmet and harness off and put it back then we went back to camp. Tree climbing was awesome and I hope I can do it again.

My writing reflection:

In my writing I have used hyperbole when I said that it was 4 times the size even though it was only like twice the size.
I think I am going well because I think I am putting more descriptive words than at the beginning of the year and I am writing more than I used to which is good and improves my writing skills.
I'm going to work on improving putting more similes, hyperboles, metaphors, show not tell, strong verbs, activating nouns, and personification.
My next step in my writing is to put better words and descriptive words in my writing so I pull my readers in more.

Term 1 arts reflection

Term 1 arts reflection

In term 1 we focused on beat, rhythm, pulse, the vibe, and dynamics. We did a beat performance for our learning of pumanawatanga. Pumanawatanga is a canoe which we are all in with no exception. Beat is a consistent beat that keeps the rhythm in time.

My role in the performance was in the sewing group. In the sewing group there were Abby, Paisley, Samantha, Nadine, Margaret, and myself. We were the second group of the performance. Our group was the sewing group because during discovery time most of us were the people who did the sewing even though other people did sewing but they did other things and we needed to make the groups sort of even.

A struggle for me was doing the performance when the parents were watching even though I was in a big group it was uncomfortable because I don't like doing things like performances and stuff like that in front of people.

A highlight for me was camp because it was my 2nd camp I have ever been on. It was a fun camp because I never got hurt but my friend did. Bear grylls was fun because we made a hut and my roll was collecting the sticks for the hut and our was the best hut in the competition. It also was a highlight because mountain biking and tree climbing were really fun.

In term one I learnt how to sew something like a pillow and other stuff like that and that I can do a performance in a big group.

At the start of term one I felt like I knew nothing about beat but after the performance I felt like I knew more about beat than I knew at the start of the term.

SOLO level of thinking is multistructural because I can identify beat in many ways.

My next step is to understand the purpose about beat in other contexts.

Overall I have learnt about beat in many ways.

My special place

My Special Place

Colourful birds sing in the beautiful trees.
Sparkling water shimmers in the sun.
Shiny rocks help me get across the big creak.
The leafy bush sways in the breeze.
The monstrous trees surround me in the great big forest.
The mossy logs make a slippery bridge across the river.
That is my special place and I can't wait to go back to  it.

Discovery time reflection

Discovery Time Reflection
22/03/16

Today at Discovery Time I was with Will, Brooke, Lucy.H, Mason, and Liam. We were doing tukutuku panels we were at the art table.
The role I played was learning how to make tukutuku panels because I didn't know how to but now I know because I looked in a book that the teacher had.
A strategy I used was listen to instructions because I might have messed up if I didn't look at the book.
Something new I learned was how to make tukutuku panels like what to do like paint tape and other stuff.
A struggle for me was painting the tukutuku panels because I kept on doing curvy lines.
I showed a growth mindset when I never gave up trying to do a straight line.
Next Discovery Time I will continue to do the tukutuku panels.
Overall it was fun doing tukutuku panels and I think I did a good paint job.

Popcorn Description

Popcorn Description

I could hear the popcorn popping and sizzling in the machine I could also hear the popcorn bursting out of the machine and it sounded like a hair dryer. The popcorn smelt like hot butter that you get from the movies. The fluffy sheep looking popcorn was flying out of the machine like lightning bolts hitting a tree. The nice, crunchy, soft taste was like when I went to the movies. It's texture was of polystyrene like when we were moving and I accidentally got polystyrene in my mouth.
